Sampsa Vilhunen is a record collector and a dj, who has played vinyls since 1990s and co-founder of legendary Club Wahoo!
Sampsa considers himself more of a record collector than a dj. Yet, he has nearly a 20-year experience in filling the dance floors, from Helsinki to Vienna and London. Sampsa started with drum 'n' bass and acid jazz in the early 1990's, eventually has moved thru jazz to become an 'all-around soul jockey' as he calls himself. Sampsa's sets are typically merging together northern and boogaloo with r'n'b and x-over soul. His legendary "Club Wahoo!" has been selected as the best club night in Helsinki a few times. Currently Sampsa is running a highly popular club night in Helsinki entitled 'Big Shake'. The Big Shake is all about r 'n' b, jump blues, and the so called 'titty-shakers', i.e., seductive and wild rock 'n' roll instrumentals.
Sampsa's first experiences with older Finnish popular music were thru his grandfather's record collection. The grandfather himself had been spinning the very same records semi-professionally in the Finnish open air dance halls in 50's and 60's. Sampsa's collection of 'Finnish rare grooves' has then expanded over the years with active crate-digging road trips across the Finnish countryside. Now the collection of original 78s and 45s is top of the line, and Sampsa enjoys introducing the new Finnish discoveries to young crowds - in Flow festival and summery mbar terrace surroundings.
