Alex Nieminen is one of the best known and acclaimed dance music pioneers in Finland. He begun DJ'ing in school parties in 1982, and moved to clubs as soon as they let him in.
To complement club DJ'ing Alex started hosting a successful rap show on local radio station at the age of 16. In 1991 he widened his musical scope a started hosting Dancemob, a weekly 2-hour nationwideshow highlighting the best of the dance on nationwide radio. The show featured regular guest spots by Tim Westwood, Gilles Peterson, Dr. Bob Jones, Dave Dorrell and Paul "Trouble" Anderson and host of other guests.
After quitting the radioshow in 1998 Alex took a break from professional DJ'ing – for a decade. In 2009 Alex made a comeback on the Hacienda worldtour in Helsinki and has been back behind the booth ever since.
In June 2010 Alex and Jori Hulkkonen released their first single as Stop Modernists. The single, a cover version of New Order's Subculture (Keys of Life), featured Chris Lowe of The Pet Shop Boys on vocals. A follow-up single featuring italo-disco legend Fred Ventura on vocals will be released on Serenades label this autumn. Another record, a tech house/dub techno collaboration between Alex and Heikki L as Deux Tigres will be released in September.
