Roger Robinson (UK)
Roger Robinson emerged in the early nineties as one of spoken words most inventive performers bridging the gap between literary and popular culture scenes. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, who has taught English literature at colleges and schools across the country, he has become one of England’s most intelligent and gifted poets.
Sensing the increasing economic constrictions and diminishing opportunities that would soon place a stranglehold on the more adventurous aspects of poetry and spoken word, Robinson adapted to become a musical performer. He toured Europe with the Urban Poets Society, which led to him releasing a spoken word ep called Chocolate Art and becoming an opening act for Run DMC and De La Soul.
Robinson began writing lyrics and performing poems for other bands and musicians he’d meet. It was then that he gained musical respect in these circles as a musician his own right. These include Techno Animal, Flytronix, The Bug, Attica Blues, Speeka, The Shout, Charlie Dark and The Mighty Jeddo to name a few.A collaboration with Rob MacDonald from Speeka on his debut album, Illclectica, also led to production on his new upcoming solo project. The album Illclectica was released in 2004 on Altered Vibes and was named by Mojo Magazine as number eight in the top ten electronic albums for that year. Gilles Peterson also selected “Dreemkeepa” from the Illclectica album as a worldwide winner on Radio 1 and used the track on his “Petit Dejeuner au Lit” compilation for Habitat furniture stores.
2005 saw the release of The Armed and Beautiful EP on Altered Vibes following suit, with collaborations from J Todd, Elmore Judd, Dobie and Drew Horley.
Robinson has released an album as King Midas Sound with Kevin Martin and Hitomi, called Waiting For You, to mass critical acclaim on Hyperdub Records. Waiting for You came in at number 10 in the top 50 releases of 2009 in Wire Magazine. He is currently touring and recording with King Midas Sound, working on some new exciting collaborations and is also in the process of recording his second solo album called New Broken Things to be released on his imprint Majesty Records this year.
