Zoukous

Kaveri Special band brings their Finnish melange of African grooves live on stage this Wednesday at mbar. Fredrik Lavik and Markus-Setä from Zoukous sound system offer their futuristic blend of African and Caribbean treasures from 7 pm to 2 am.

“They do afrobeat in a sort of Scandinavian, Jimi Tenor post weird psychedelic way. You’re going to love it!”
- Gilles Peterson, BBC (UK)

Kaveri Special plays music that pays tribute to classic African guitar music, particularly highlife and soukous. The combo of Felix Adje, Kimmo Kivistö, Tuomas Palonen, Tino Puisto and Jonne Renvall bring a flavor which is at the same time distinctly Finnish and African, joyous, deep and energetic. Their self-titled debut album was released in March 2014.

The Zoukous night is hosted by selectors Fredrik Lavik and Markus-Setä, who turn on their sound system dedicated to vintage rarities and retro-futuristic delights from tropical regions. Everything from benga, biguine, afro-cuban, deep roots and cumbia to related rhythm music of a more dubbed-out and drum machine accompanied nature will be played.
