20th Funky Elephant Festival


Funky Elephant movie night will be held together with Future Shorts Helsinki in the intimate surroundings of mbar. The programme is designed especially for Funky Elephant and both the evening and the festival end with live gig from Yhdentekevää.

Future Shorts is the biggest pop up movie festival in the world as well as a short film network covering 90 countries. Over 10 years Future Shorts has collected the most interesting short films in the world to be shown on new venues: in cafes, schools, pubs and night clubs.

Future Shorts landed in Finland six years ago but this is the first collaboration with Funky Elephant. Before the intriguing documentaries about breakdancing and dub music a few Future Shorts classics will be screened.

Suomibreikkiä 1983–2013
Hiski Hämäläinen (Suomi 2013). 90 min + Q&A, Tuotanto Kiitama Oy
Breakdance aka b-boying arrived to Finland in 1983. Documentary Suomibreikkiä 1983–2013 introduces the scene from the first moves to these days with loads of archive material and interviews from the key figures.

Dub Echoes
Bruno Natal (Brasilia 2008). 75 min.
The brasilian film crew went to Kingston, London, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to trace the origin and the influence of Jamaican dub music. The documentary shows how dub music made the studio one of its instruments.

Future Shorts short films

Heavy Metal Drummer
Luke Morris (UK – Morocco 2005). 6 min.
15 year old Moroccon boy is the only heavy metal fan in his hometown. On weekends he plays at weddings but in his dreams he is headlining the Monsters of Rock festival.

The Archive
Sean Dunne (USA 2008). 8 min.
The short documentary takes a look at the largest vinyl record collection in the world as well as the whole American record industry.

Funky Elephant is an annual black rhythm music festival celebrated every spring since 1994. The festival has earned its legendary status by bringing the most interesting international acts as well the best and the coolest domestic acts in the scene.
